Jack X Proctor
"It is only in our decisions that we are important."
Jean-Paul Sartre
Jack X Proctor studied at Santa Monica College Photography Department before transferring to the BFA for Photography at California State University Long Beach. They are an image based artist dealing with human relationships and human connections, increasingly drawing correlations between ecological systems and human interaction. Largely working with black and white film or neutrally toned video, subjects are constructed from vulnerability, sensuality and performance of an experience or feeling. Mainly photographing humans in spaces which are amniotic or obvious contrasts to reality, Jack is dealing with the impression of memories in a conversation with the everyday with a heavy constructed translation. A compulsion to be consumed in moments that are fading with every moment are taken out of time to create a new gesture which is a hyperbolized truth of existence. The awareness of the lack of access to memories are reconstructed with absurd moments confronting duration. Dealing with collaboration both between subject and photographer, Jack pushes the comfort zone of everyone involved in a forced intimacy between subjects and as in directing the image. Ultimately their work explores larger systems, influencing visual patterns in relation to human connections. Jack’s work most recently has been recently exhibited in Johnson City, Texas winning the Directors Award.
